At the begining of January I began full time work with Dorkly/College Humor, and I couldn't be happier. If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter you probably have been seeing my contributions to College Humor since last Summer when I would freelance for them, but as a position for Staff Illustrator opened up I was offered a job and accepted it with the force of a thousand exploding suns. I am now in my second week and for once in my life I look forward to going into work.
ARTISTS, WEB COMIC AUTHORS, ILLUSTRATORS, DOODLERS, AND OTHER PIE-IN-THE-SKY DREAMERS: YOU CAN DO IT.
Going from an aspiring comic artist to having my dream job was a long uphill road, but I knew if I stuck to it and stayed true to myself and my work that I would make it. I didn't know exactly what "making it" would be, but I knew I'd get there. My advice:
KEEP DRAWING, FUCK THE NAYSAYERS. THEY DON'T KNOW SHIT.
I can't tell you how many times I had to hear "You can't just draw comics all day." But drawing comics all day is the only reason I am where I am right now, so eat it. HERE'S HOW I GOT THE JOB: I draw a lot of fucking comics (as you may be aware) and sometimes the internet gets a hold of them and they slither their way into the interbutts of the vast technoweb audience (as you also may be aware), which leads to important fucking people seeing them. People like those that work at College Humor. They ask me to do a little side work illustrating scripts for them, then pitch scripts of my own, and before you know it they are coming to me regularly for comics and articles. I rock the fuck out of that for a few months and when a staff position opens up, whose name do you think is on their lips?
Motha. Fucking. Jhall's.
Yeah, maybe if I bagged groceries for a while and managed to save enough money before blowing my head off I would have been in a better financial situation than I was a few years ago, but that aint me. I play the long game. Which is kind of like the lottery.
Well y'know what?
JACKPOT, MOTHER FUCKER.
PS: I'm still going to update my site, don't worry. For the time being it may be sparse though until I get into the routine of the new job. <3
